It was so much fun!!
Amber contacted me from Los Angeles. She is from "The Region" which I always think is ironic because it seems like all the great people I've met in Indy have been from Valpo, When my big kid was in preschool his BFF's mom was from Valpo, We've moved on and now big kids new BFF has a mother also from Valpo. I LOVE Amber!!! She is so full of energy and life and smiles and giggles. She giggled through her wedding with nervous excitement! So friendly!
Mr. Amber, AKA, Andrew (and this is OK because no names were actually changed with this marriage) is from the Indy area so it was decided they would get married at Purdue, their alma mater and in-between both families. And, well, they met there and had an all around good time there too so why not?
I met the two of them for the first time at the rehearsal and we got along right away. They got married in Academy Park which is sort of like a Roman amphitheater. So, it's round and has 6 entrances. Yes, it was a fun rehearsal figuring it all out and the ushers were trying to figure out how to formally seat people. But, you know what? A great time was had by all! Rehearsals are usually a work in progress trying to figure out what to do when and how and then doing it in a circle.. I really don't think a minute went by without laughing or jokes!
When I arrived the morning of the wedding I came out of the parking garage to the whole wedding party getting pictures taken still having fun! Yes, they were dressed beautifully, running thorough West Lafayette with an equally fun photographer getting pictures taken before 10 AM, (No, they are no longer college students huh?)
All fun and games? The brides ring was lost. But, hey, it was found. And, just in time! I think something else was weird but I can't remember now so, no worries huh? It was close to 90 degrees and the guys were in black tux's. The ladies were in black dresses, albeit, much smaller and cooler then the tux's. They all had different shoes on too which looked really cool. The groom had sweat dripping off his nose while saying his vows and the bride was beside herself with glee!!!!!! She later told me that was to keep from crying she was THAT happy!!!
The father of the bride is absolutely adorable. Before the ceremony started he was asking me what he was supposed to say. As in, "Her Mother and I do." I thought he was joking when he asked. No, he was serious. But, it kept the ceremony fun. And, not only was it fun, it was real.
Because I officiate all kinds of weddings and usually much more casual and heartfelt weddings then the strict religious counterparts they all have personality. I love that. More and more, I find couples are letting go of the formalities for reality. And wonderful realities at that. It allows for laughing and funny comments during the ceremony. Everyone feel good and they are comfortable.
So often, couples will say "we want it SHORT! Like, 10 minutes, no more then 15." They are of course comparing this to long religious services with communion or a mass for 250 of your closest uncomfortable friends trying to figure out where they fit into religion. I do great ceremonies all the time that literally do last 10-15 minutes. And that's not because we want them to be short, but because when you take all the formalities that were once thought required and replace it with your own style and personality that's what you get. 15 minutes of wonderful memories!!
I really knew this wedding was going to be great when they changed their first reading to Adam Sandler's "I Wanna Grow Old With You" from The Wedding Singer. It was cute and funny and filled with personality and the vows were still beautiful and heartfelt and romantic and every bit serious that they should be.
The newlyweds rode away on the Boilermaker Special in true Purdue style. Amber said they were both crying as they rode away because they were so happy to be finally married....
Have I mentioned I love my job???
The shoes were cute but between pictures and the ceremony, the feet needed a break!
