It's been over 10 years since most county clerks, judges, justices of the peace, and magistrates stopped marrying couples. You used to be able to go to small claims court in the City County Building and get married. But, they stopped. If you were to ask them why they might look at you like you are crazy because it's old news (to them). But, to most people it's brand new news and they are faced with a problem... Where can I have a simple civil ceremony if I can't get married at the courthouse?
To be fair - you can get married at some courthouse in Indiana. Our offices are located in Marion County and I can tell you for sure, they do not marry couples at the Marion County Clerk. The only exception may be Valentine's Day. The Johnson County Clerk and the Hendricks County Clerk do not perform marriages. Sometimes, couples have been lucky and gotten married while in the Hancock County Clerk's office - but it's always been a last minute situation when the clerk had time and was able to do it. I think their official stance, is that they do not perform marriages. Contact the clerk where you live to ask, if you are not sure. You can either search your county clerk with your search engine or follow this link to find your clerk's information. The one exception in the Indianapolis area, is in Hamilton County. You can make an appointment with the magistrate to get married. They are not always available for marriages but if you live in Hamilton County and you plan ahead, it is an option.
