The Declaration of Intent - Christian "I Do's!"

2/22/2023

I Do!

Picture
Here is a collection of Christian marriage vows and declaration of intent I have gathered.  At some point during the wedding ceremony, you need to say "I do" and consent to the marriage.  It's pretty much the only thing you have to do when you get married. Many denominations have their standard vows written in their prayer books.
Non-Denominational Declaration of Intent 1

I Name, take you, Name, to be no other than yourself. Loving what I know of you, trusting what I do not yet know, I will respect your integrity and have faith in your abiding love for me, through all our years, and in all that life may bring us.

Non-Denominational Declaration of Intent 2
Name, I take you as my husband/wife, with your faults and your strengths, as I offer myself to you with my faults and my strengths. I will help you when you need help and turn to you when I need help. I choose you as the person with whom I will spend my life.

Non-Denominational Declaration of Intent 3
I promise to love you above all others and to value your friendship as a precious gift.  I look forward to raising our family and building our relationship under the care and guidance of God. I promise to stand beside you in sickness or health, in times of prosper and decline, in peace and in turmoil, as long as we both shall live.

Quaker Declaration of Intent
In the presence of God and these our friends I take thee, Name, to be my husband/wife/spouse, promising with Divine assistance to be unto thee a loving and faithful husband/wife so long as we both shall live

Protestant Declaration of Intent
I, Name, take thee, Name, to be my wedded wife/husband/spouse, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge thee my faith [or] pledge myself to you.

Presbyterian Declaration of Intent/Vows
Name, wilt thou have this man/woman/person to be thy wife/husband/spouse, and wilt thou pledge thy faith to her/him/them, in all love and honor, in all duty and service, in all faith and tenderness, to live with her/him/them, and cherish her/him/them, according to the ordinance of God, in the holy bond of marriage?  Answer: I Will.

Please repeat after me:

I, Name, take you, Name, to be my wedded wife/husband/spouse, and I do promise and covenant, before God and these witnesses, to be your loving and faithful husband/wife/spouse, in plenty and want, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, as long as we both shall live.

Methodist Declaration of Intent/Vows
Name, will you have this woman/man/person to be your wife/husband/spouse, to live together in holy marriage? Will you love her/him/them, comfort her/him/them, honor, and keep  her/him/them in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others, be faithful to  her/him/them as long as you both shall live?

Please repeat after me:

In the name of God, I, Name, take you, Name, to be my wife/husband/spouse, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.

Lutheran Declaration of Intent/Vows
I, Name, take you, Name, to be my wife/husband/spouse, and these things I promise you: I will be faithful to you and honest with you; I will respect, trust, help, and care for you; I will share my life with you; I will forgive you as we have been forgiven; and I will try with you better to understand ourselves, the world and God; through the best and worst of what is to come, and as long as we live.

Alternative Lutheran Vows
I take you, Name, to be my wife/hushand/spouse from this day forward, to join with you and share all that is to come, and I promise to be faithful to you until death parts us.

Episcopal Declaration of Intent/Vows
Name, wilt thou have this woman/man/person to be thy wedded wife/husband/spouse to live together after God's ordinance in the Holy Estate of matrimony? Wilt thou love her/him/them? Comfort her/him/them, honor and keep her/him/them, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others keep thee only unto her/him/them as long as you both shall live?

Please repeat after me:

In the name of God, I, Name, take you, Name to be my wife/husband/spouse, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, to love and to cherish, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow.
Catholic Wedding Vows/Declaration of Intent
Name and Name, have you come here freely and without reservation to give yourselves to each other in marriage?

"Will you honor each other as man and wife for the rest of your lives?"

"Will you accept children lovingly from God, and bring them up according to the law of Christ and his Church?"

You will respond with either "I will" or "yes," then continue onto the vows themselves:

I, Name, take you, Name, to be my husband/wife. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you and honor you all the days of my life.
